Large rectangular metal planters have become a familiar feature in modern gardens. Their simple shape works particularly well along terraces, beside entrances and as a way of dividing one part of a garden from another.
Why use a large planter?
A substantial planter gives plants enough soil volume to establish properly and does not dry out as quickly as a small pot. Long rectangular models can also create a clear line in the garden without building a permanent wall or raised bed.
Steel and other metals
Powder-coated steel gives a clean, even finish and is available in many colours. Corten steel is designed to develop a rust-coloured protective surface and is often chosen for more architectural gardens. Galvanised steel has a different, more practical appearance.
Drainage is important
Large outdoor planters need adequate drainage holes. Water must be able to leave the container, especially during winter. Raising the base slightly above paving can also help water escape.
Think about the final weight
A large metal planter may be relatively easy to move when empty but becomes extremely heavy once filled with soil. Decide on its position before filling it and check that a roof terrace or other structure can carry the load where relevant.
Planting
The size of the planter should suit the mature size of the plants. Grasses, clipped shrubs, small trees and combinations of perennials can all work well. For permanent planting, use a good-quality growing medium and allow enough depth for the roots.
The attraction of a large rectangular metal planter is its simplicity. Used carefully, it can give structure to a garden while leaving the plants themselves to provide the colour and seasonal change.
